For 2021 I had plants on my list that I thought would impress people and they in turn would like my photos and follow me. Suckish of me but hey, just being real here. I don’t think I bought anything on that list at all because I didn’t love any of it at the time; although, looking back the scindapsus exotica, astrophytum, and the bear paws were on it and I have them both now ahaha. I wanted to impress people instead of buying what I truly loved. I know better know!
So I was much more realistic in 2022 with putting plants on the list that I consistently went wow every time I saw a picture of them and I need to remember this when I’m in the mood to buy plants because I honestly do not love my impulse buys. I like them but that’s it.
I am only planning on buying 4 plants, hopefully I can stick to it, or at the very least buy plants that are only on my overall plant list that I’ve heavily researched and love. I have 2 plant lists: the main one contains every plant I find interesting and the other is the current year wish list, so if it seems like I’m referencing 2 lists it’s because I actually am ahaha.
Other than the 4 plants I really want to focus on getting all my plants into terracotta besides a select few which I feel will be better in ceramic. Maybe find terracotta inspired ceramic planters! It’ll be a slower process as I won’t be repotting just because I want them in new pots. I originally wanted all of them in white ceramic planters for non cacti plants, but they’re a lot more expensive and I have some plants that grow way too quickly to justify buying ceramic pots.
So the other items on my wish list are plant stands or wall hanging, or even a nicer bookshelf to display my tabletop plants (and books at the same time, dual purpose baby).
I was going to put the tephrocactus geometricus on my 2023 list because I didn’t get it in 2022, but my husband got it for me so I was able to check it off! It is so adorable. I really feel like my cacti collection is now complete. It brings me so much joy when I see them in their sunny spots. It’ll probably change down the road but right now there isn’t any cactus that I want or am wowed by.
I have really gravitated towards the anthurium vittarifolium and pallidiflorum the last couple of months, and I know we’ll probably be moving out of Arizona this year and I don’t want to try my hand at a fussy plant in a genus I’ve never owned before and then move. Recipe for disaster in my opinion and I would be so sad if I killed one.
That being said, I could die tomorrow or become ill and I should do what makes me happy (within reason and be smart with my spending). My all time number 1 wish list/favorite/dream plant has to be the Hoya serpens. Not super finicky but also not the easiest plant potentially? Real early in my plant journey I saw the Hoya mathilde and I was like dang, I don’t like hoyas, but you got my attention and a spot on my list. THEN I found out about the serpens and it was love at first sight.
So I think I’m going to put the hoya serpens on my 2023 wish list and if I feel comfortable I’m going to get it. I don’t think it’s a super fussy plant but I cannot express how much I truly find this plant special and beautiful and just down right wow, and would be so sad if it puked during a move. So I’m not sure when exactly I’d get it.
I also want to get the scindapsus argyraeus but it’s not as high on the list as the serpens or the dracaenas I have picked out I’ll talk about shortly. I am not looking to get a full plant of the argyraeus, just a small 3-4 inch pot to add it to my scindapsus exotica which is growing beautifully on a chain trellis. I honestly think they would look so striking together, and so far my exotica has been so easy for me. I can’t imagine the argyraeus would be different.
When we were visiting Arizona in June my husband bought me some planters, small but adorable, and I haven’t filled them yet. I knew that dracaenas had varieties that started out super small, so I did some googling and found a bunch I liked. I knew I was probably going to get the pinguicula because I have always found it striking and wowed by it. It’s called the walking sansevieria and it’s just a cool looking plant.
But I must admit I hemmed and hawed on a few varieties, so much so, that I had my husband look at the mature forms of the final 3 I had picked out to see which ones he liked best. I just wanted to see what he picked and he picked the same ones I did ahaha. It just helps confirm my decisions sometimes. He’s such a good man.
So I picked out the dracaena ehrenbergii banana and pinguicula. I really think they’re going to be so cool in their juvenile and in their mature. Definitely conversation pieces like my husband said ahaha. (And to address the elephant in the room I did purchase 2 of my wish list plants already if the pictures on this post don’t already tell which ones ahaha).
I’m excited for the plants on my list and plant decor ideas.
To recap my wish list for 2023:
Hoya serpens
Scindapsus argyraeus
Dracaena pinguicula
Dracaena ehrenbergii banana
Terracotta pots
Plant stand, wall hangers, etc
I’m ready to see how this year goes. Let’s do this!
