I have all but 1 cactus out on the balcony that is west facing, and I have been keeping an eye on the temps since putting plants out there.
It’s very new for me to be thinking of overnight temps as I’ve never had outdoor plants other than what my mom had out during the summer which I never handled really other than watering them when my mom told me too ahaha. It’s been wild seeing new growth emerge so quickly on some of the cacti and flowers on another. I don’t want them to get damaged when I can protect them easily by bringing them indoors. They bring me so much joy!
I googled and went on the Apollo app (for Reddit) to find out if I even needed to bring the cacti in, and I couldn’t get a straight answer or all the scenarios didn’t fit my situation – at least I felt like it. I felt like since they were so small and in pots that they might not do so well in temps under 60, especially if there was a sudden drop….
Most were for Midwest scenarios that definitely saw snow and it’s obvious when to bring them in but I couldn’t find anything that agreed on when exactly! Some places said 50s while others said 60s, but what I ended up doing was looking up each cactus and seeing the lows they could handle and most could handle the 50s easily but that’s when they go into dormancy, and I don’t want to deal with that.
So what I ended up doing was leaving them out on the balcony while it remained in the 60s overnight, but any lower I will bring them in. My yucca needs to be in sooner than the cacti! Ahaha
I have spots ready for them while they stay indoors overnight (or if it’s too cold during the day) in a nice west facing window that gets sun almost as quickly as the balcony did. I don’t feel comfortable leaving them out below 60 degrees so that’s my game plan.
If I’m honest I’m happy they’re in my home
as I miss being able to see them from my spot on the couch without having to THINK of going out to the balcony, but I know they do 1000x times better outside. I just prefer them inside near me….
