A Trellis? Trailing? Oh my….

I bought a scindapsus exotica in January, and I picked a small one mind you, and I regretted it a little ‘cause it wasn’t  growing as fast I wanted it too the first month but now it’s just pushing out leaves like crazy! With the above photo, this is the second leaf coming up in my care in the way back, ahahaha.

I’ve been hemming and hawing if I want to use a trellis or plank for the scindapsus, or have it trail – such a weird a thought for me. I normally don’t gravitate towards trailing plants but the last couple months I’m slowly coming around to them.

A plank isn’t bad but the biggest obstacle is if I want to extend upward to a point and I would have to be creative in figuring out how that would work exactly. I would also have to chop and prop the plant eventually and I’m fine with that, especially to fill the plank out more, and that will take some time. If I could do some fancy woodwork like hexagon designs on the plank – it would be pretty sweet if I could do that, but I might need my dad’s skills for that one.

If I were to have it trailing I know it won’t get the big leaves like it would if it was climbing, but as long as I give it plenty of sun I don’t think the leaves would get smaller down the vines necessarily? I will see how long I can stay with the plank/trellis idea but I might have the exotica trailing by the end of the year, ahaha.

I think a trellis would be the best option right now for me. My husband bought me a brass trellis for my birthday, and originally I was going to use the brass trellis for something else, but eventually I decided to have the scindapsus climb it but it’s got a ways to go before it reaches the top.

I’m excited to see it grow up the trellis. Spring is finally here and I see my plants going to town on new growth and my scindapsus is pushing out its fifth leaf in my care and this one is going to be bigger than the first one that came out. Woot woot. I want to get the Scindapsus argyraeus and pot it with exotica and see the size difference between the leaves; I think it would add some dimension that would be beautiful!

I’m slowly getting into trailing plants and it’s scaring me a tiny bit, ahahaha. Watch, next year I’ll be loving all hoyas……
