Winter Lighting

Around October all the plant forums started popping up with a lot of winter lighting questions and memes about “winter is coming” or “so it begins” concerning the dreaded winter lighting.

I was a little bit nervous for a few of my plants, but while the lighting isn’t the best I lucked out with south-facing apartment and my plants don’t seem to be doing too bad, given my dracaena and yucca plant could have gotten a wee bit more light, but overall they’re doing just fine. I  will say though I feel like my yucca has a bit more spacing in between leaves the last couple of months but it might all in my head.

It’s hard to keep all my plants in one corner and provide lighting to them all, so I would have to prioritize a few of them or do a rotation of plants on a weekly basis for them – and frankly that sounds miserable to do, but it has to be done I guess. I just don’t usually. I lucked out that most of my plants I haven’t had to rotate them honestly. It’s been mainly my dracaena and the variegated peperomia that I’ve noticed needed turning here and there.

For this coming winter I am hoping to be in the same apartment or another apartment that has at least 1 south-facing window….fingers crossed, ahaha.

My succulents on the other hand are doing really well, but they have that monster Mars Hydro light so they should be doing great! I’ve been documenting my rainbow hedgehog cactus progress to see if it’s actually doing alright under it and so far it seems to be doing great – so I’m excited to add more cacti to my collection this year.

Since getting into plants I have thought about moving to a state that barely sees snow just so I could have outdoor plants all year round potentially. Gosh, that would be amazing. If you would have told me that ten years ago I would have been shocked and somewhat horrified at the thought of moving out of my state just for plants, ahaha. Now it sounds nice! Some things would have to change before we’d even consider buying a house there, but renting for a year or so wouldn’t be an issue honestly. I don’t know what tomorrow holds, so I shouldn’t bank on it or give up on the idea altogether.

I’m sort of ready for a sunny, spring day that turns into a hot summer day at the pool….my mood would benefit too from some sunny days.
